Program Overview:
The Work Based Learning Program provides contextualized learning to participants at our training sites. The goal of the program is to provide paid job training, vocational counseling and employment services to individuals with significant barriers to employment.

Who We Serve:
Participants in this program are typically over 18 years of age; a resident of one of the many impoverished communities in San Francisco and have a significant barrier to employment such as a criminal conviction, homelessness, a disability, and/or low-income status.

Enrollment Process:
After successful completion of intake, assessment, drug-testing, work based evaluation, and HR orientation, participants are placed on the waiting list for Goodwill’s Work Based Learning Program. The program can last for up to six months depending upon individual need. (Please review the Intake and Assessment Services for further eligibility information).

Program Details:
Contextualized training sites consist of our retail stores or retail warehouse training site. While working a maximum of thirty-hours a week, participants gain transferable skills, develop recent work history and learn overall work attitudes. Participants will work closely with worksite trainers to attain skills and overcome potential worksite issues.

During enrollment in the Work Based Learning Program participants will work with a Career Advisor to develop an Individual Career Develop Plan (ICDP) that will help them identify career goals and strategies to attain them, define their skills and abilities, and review employment barriers and means to overcome them. The Career Advisor will also work diligently to prepare them for employment by working with them on creating a master application, identifying professional references, attaining interview clothing conducting job interview preparation. These “job readiness” steps help prepare participants for a referral to work with Goodwill’s staffing specialists to help them attain unsubsidized employment. (Please review the Job Placement Services for further placement information).

Successful participants from our program will have completed up to six months of paid work experience and will have attained unsubsidized employment.
