Goodwill Receives $50,000 Challenge Gift
December 12, 2008
Elvin Fowler is passionate about helping people find jobs. That’s why he has been a passionate supporter of Goodwill for 50 years.
Mr. Fowler’s life-long work has been putting other people to work. He says, “That was my expertise. I worked with job placement my whole career.” After World War II, Mr. Fowler worked at the U.S. Civil Service Commission with veterans coming back home. Later he worked as District Director of the State Vocational Rehabilitation Program where he forged a relationship with Goodwill. His agency referred selected people to Goodwill because they would receive job training, counseling, or job placement.
In 1942, Mr. Fowler met George Post, a landscape artist who became world-renowned for his work. After retirement, they traveled the world extensively. Mr. Fowler continues to live in the same house he and Mr. Post moved into in 1958, now sharing his home with his late partner’s daughter, Shelly Post Gardner. He enjoys sitting in the tiny, flower-filled garden on those days when the sun shines in San Francisco.
At 98, Mr. Fowler’s commitment to Goodwill is just as strong as ever. That’s why he has pledged a $50,000 challenge gift to support Goodwill in these bleak economic times. Thanks to Mr. Fowler, every gift made to Goodwill will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to a total of $50,000.
He says, “Goodwill serves a great need in our community by helping people with counseling, training, and job placement. I would like to see other people help Goodwill in this time of need.”
Thanks to Elvin Fowler, and other committed supporters like him, Goodwill can rise to the occasion, now that the need for our work is greater than ever.
