Goodwill Client Beats Drug Addiction and Excels in Retail Training Program
October 3, 2008
Before joining Goodwill's job-training program, Libby was in a drug rehabilitation program and had just gotten out of prison. Now she is a star salesperson.
After two weeks in orientation, Libby started in the Sales and Service training program. “I worked at the Fillmore store managing the fitting rooms, outdating, colorizing, and working my way up to running the cash register,” recalls Libby. “I worked alongside Fillmore Store Manager Lonnie Tuck, Operations Manager Erin Teahan, Assistant Manager Matthew Sager, and Mario Davila, who was Assistant Manager at Fillmore at that time. They were really positive and encouraging people in my life. They made me believe in myself and made me feel like I was a real person in the work world.”
“Libby set the bar for all other Transitional Employees to follow,” says Sales and Service Career Advisor Diane Yeaton. “At the time I started working with Libby, I was a new career advisor. She was the first participant to complete the first three levels of the Sales and Service training. Libby always maintained a very positive outlook and took initiative wherever she could. In my opinion, she’s a star.”
Admissions Coordinator Laura Burton also played an important part in Libby’s growth. “She believed in me and gave me a chance,” says Libby. “She could tell that I was eager to work and made me feel positive about what I was doing.”
“I enjoy working in retail at Goodwill because I get to interact with so many people in a positive environment,” says Libby. “In the future, I would like to become a retail manager.”
