SUCCESS STORY
“Having a job here was a key part of my recovery.”
August 11, 2008
“I enjoy seeing all the different parts that make up our organization,” says Joe Dellea.
Joe came to Goodwill in the winter of 2000, following a period of unemployment when he was dealing with chemical dependence recovery issues. “I got a temporary job here through Goodwill Staffing Services, which was a collaborative temp agency run by several Goodwills in the area,” says Joe. “Having a job where I had to be responsible and where I felt valued was a key part of my recovery.”
“My temp job was in the HR department, working for Stephanie Kim,” continues Joe. “After a few months in HR, I was hired full-time as Administrative Assistant and Board Liaison by Mary Edington, who was President and CEO at that time.”
Today as Executive Assistant in the Office of the President, Joe works closely with President & CEO Deborah Alvarez-Rodriquez and he supervises Administrative Assistant Bonnie Bowes. You may often find him right outside of Deborah’s office or rushing to meetings with Board members.
Joe also coordinates activities with the Board of Directors, keeps track of corporate records, and manages relationships with consultants. “Every day at work brings new challenges,” says Joe. “That’s the nature of being part of an organization that’s growing and changing.”
“I learned a lot from both Debbie and Mary,” says Joe. “They have different styles and they both taught me how non-profits function. Over the years, I have had many role models and mentors at Goodwill. Retail Instructor Linda Oziel has always been an inspiration to me. I admire her commitment to the mission and her willingness to try new roles.”
“Working with Joe has been a true joy and honor.” says former President & CEO Mary Edington. “I found him to be a highly intelligent and compassionate person who did his work with extraordinary dedication. Joe has a remarkable memory, a gift for writing, and a zeal for learning and growing.”
“Joe Dellea is a great teacher and mentor to me, ” says President & CEO Deborah Alvarez-Rodriquez. “Joe is one of the best problem-solvers I have ever had the good fortune to work with.”
Looking into the future, Joe hopes to continue to find opportunities to grow in his role within Goodwill.
“I think a lot of people who arrive at our doors may feel hopeless,” says Joe. “When we open our doors we give people a chance to start their lives over again. It’s powerful to know that Goodwill believes in you until you believe in yourself.”
