PROGRAM NEWSGoodwill Staff Learns American Sign Language
August 4, 2008
Ten members of the Goodwill staff recently received training in basic American Sign Language (ASL). This class was designed to assist hearing staff in communicating with deaf staff and participants. “I learned many words and sentences that well help me to communicate with our deaf and hard-of-hearing participants,” said Kirill Elistratov, Manager of Placement Services. “I’ve also learned a lot about deaf culture in the class.”
The class was 90 minutes per session for seven sessions, taught by Credentialed ASL Instructor Steven Mayers, who was doing an internship with Goodwill’s Training Manager Olivia Bibb. ASL interpreter Peter Bolesh translated the instruction. Students learned the ASL alphabet, numbers, and conversational phrases. “It was very helpful for me to learn the alphabet so that I can spell out words I don’t know.” said Front Office Administrator Dorina Erkeneff.
“Not being able to understand my instructor was frustrating at times for me,” said Retail Instructor Linda Oziel. “I gained a new respect for those who are trying to conquer any language barrier.”
